The best/worst PURPLE PROSE of all time

Sonia Leong - Mon, 06/09/2010 - 2:38pm
After some random browsing, I came across a scan of a couple of pages from "Bronwyn: Silk & Steel" by Ron Miller.

The actual book is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bronwyn-Silk-Steel/dp/1587520664

Read the scanned pages here: http://www.crackerboxpalace.com/verypurple.jpg

WARNING: DO NOT READ WHILST EATING/DRINKING, you will CHOKE WITH LAUGHTER

And if you ever wondered what Bronwyn could POSSIBLY look like based on the description of her...

A genius has drawn her: http://maggock.deviantart.com/art/Bronwyn-the-Beautiful-115715837

I am dying. DYING! Of mirth.

Cat food flavours?

Sonia Leong - Thu, 02/09/2010 - 10:04am
Matt (on phone): "Please pick up the Royal Canin cat food today, okay?"
Me: "Okay - which one?"
Matt: "I'm trying to remember... there's Fussy Cat flavour, Sensitive Cat flavour, Hairball Cat flavour, Outdoor Cat flavour, Diet Cat flavour..."
Me: "Um... the way you describe them makes it sound like the type of cat is the main ingredient."

J-POP GO! Sat 21st Aug after Japanese Art Fest

Sonia Leong - Tue, 17/08/2010 - 4:23pm
Oh HAI!!! Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. If you're in London this Saturday, or attending the Japanese Art Festival, why not come to a fun evening of quality music and performances?

J-POP GO! is happening at the Penderel's Oak, near Holborn. Doors open at 7pm, entry is £5.

Music is funky dancy j-pop (Morning Musume, Sputniko! and KOTOKO) and mainstream glam pop (Little Boots, Lady Gaga, Marina & the Diamonds) and anime choons (K-ON!, Paradise  Kiss, Lucky Star).

Live acts include SHH (funky electropop), Sekai no Melody (j-pop tunage!) ... and Sonia Leong. Yes, the latest special guest act added to the roster is actually ME. I will be singing an old favourite, a classic from Final Fantasy and very possibly one of my favourite songs ever. (Hint: If you like FFVIII, you should come to this).

HOMG AMECON WAS EPICALLY FUN

Sonia Leong - Mon, 16/08/2010 - 5:02pm
I'm finally back home after a frenetically fun-filled weekend at AmeCon 2010, held at Keele University. It was wonderfully refreshing for me to go to a convention for the first time in six years AS A CIVILIAN (i.e. NOT FOR WORK/GUEST/DEALER!!!). Even though I went solo, I was never left alone for longer than 15mins because, as it seemed, I knew EVERYONE THERE.

I haven't had so much fun in YEARS. AmeCon 2010 was epic and extremely enjoyable. Everything came together so well!

A selection of highlights (of many wonderfully fun things):

FRIDAY
~ the internal shuttle buses ferrying me anywhere on campus (you! The ginger driver with glasses! I LOVE YOU)
~ the digital sensor showers, LOL
~ knowing EVERYONE there
~ the cool bar (if you're cool, you know the place)
~ the pizza party (thanks Ellie for knowing Dominos by heart)
~ hanging with Kitty and Martin (^^)

SATURDAY
~ awesome breakfasts with hash browns, mmm
~ I'm Sorry I Haven't a Con (Keith and Moley's "Fly me to the Moon" rendition)
~ chatting with peeps in Artists Alley (Alice and Molly! :D)
~ topping up my porn stash (thank you United Publications for your smut box, as always)
~ Andrew giving me a great deal on the limited edition Gurren Lagann dvd sets
~ indulging my kleptomaniacal tendencies (thanks Dan, Chris and Scarlett for lending me various things throughout)
~ THOROUGHLY indulging in klepto behaviour during photoshoots (thanks Trinity Blood group, Emma in particular, for indulging me)
~ masquerade was TOP NOTCH (CONGRATS, KAREN!!!)
~ Andy's Kuja/crotch gun movement (aw yeah)
~ Louise's Cassandra BUTT BASH move
~ Ailsa & Granny's reverse gender Robin Hood / Maid Marian (you totally fooled me!!!)
~ swapping hentai recommendations with Kimpey for over an hour (thank you ♥)
~ Nert's MAGICAL VIBRATING RAINBOW STRING
~ the jpop/rock party (thanks Choco for playing my requests!)

SUNDAY
~ Perrin's YOU CAN MAKE VIDEO GAMES talk (I demand to see Blocksy in your next game)
~ very RUDE, possibly law-breaking and VERY non-PC photoshoots (nazi photo-bombing + sword blowjobs is all I will say)
~ Ed's ENORMOUS codpiece
~ Jibsy's accurate Noriko (holy shit, a MALE Noriko!)
~ Hetalia cosplay fry-pan/crotch whacking (BONG!)
~ seeing my art on the conbook and on the screen during the closing ceremony ^^ (Although - Pchan, CREDIT ME PLOX!!! XD)
~ Kuma volunteering to be my "Cockblocker"
~ Me dressing as a man for the night instead and groping (willing) ladies (thanks to Ellie, Scarlett, Nina, Angela and Emma for this)
~ Jake giving me permission to grope Rebecca :D
~ tweaking Scowny's nipples and pinging his thong
~ the cosplay ball (thank you to ALL PERSONS WHO BOUGHT ME TEQUILA, hope you enjoyed my party trick)

And there were far too many "What happens at  AmeCon, stays at AmeCon" moments which I cannot post publically here XD Sorry, general public, you're not allowed to know the more sordid details!

Hopefully, some silly photos will ensue over the next few days.

Oh yes, and the artwork I mentioned:

AyaCon 2011 mascot art, AyaChan the mermaid ^^

In the meantime, look out for me at the Japanese Art Festival. I will not only be:
selling artwork/comics
strutting my stuff on the lolita fashion catwalk and
talking on a panel on kawaii culture...

...but I will also be performing during the Jpop night, I will be singing a classic Final Fantasy song ^^

Electric Picnic!

Emma Vieceli - Mon, 09/08/2010 - 1:44pm
http://www.electricpicnic.ie/

I am going to be at this amazing-looking event, talking about COMICS, can you believe?!

And, not only that, but I'm in the company of some pretty awe-inspiring people! I can't wait - hope to see some familiar faces there ^_^

Blurb from the organisers:

Join us in the MindField on Saturday, September 4th at 5 p.m. for a chaotic and fun-stuffed rocket ride through the inner and outer reaches of the comics and cartooning universes.  Our intrepid and esteemed panel will cheerily dissect and debate the “sequential art” scene as it and was: offering thoughts, opinions and recollections on a wide range of topics, including: Classic British comics, Manga, Bande dessinée, Girls’ comics, John Major’s underpants, the Irish small presses, and much, much more. Masked and caped crusaders may also get an occasional mention…

Bios =

Pat Mills is affectionately (and accurately) known as the “godfather of British comics“. A comic industry legend, he was the founder of 2000 AD, Battle and Action. As a writer he has created some of the UK’s most seminal and best-loved comic stories: Sláine, Charley’s War, ABC Warriors, Nemesis the Warlock and many more. Among the other credits on his extensive CV are Marshal Law, Metalzoic, The Punisher 2099, Requiem Vampire Knight and Batman: The Book of Shadows.

Emma Vieceli is a freelance artist and writer based in Cambridge. Artist for 2 of the acclaimed Manga Shakespeare graphic novels (and featured in the award-winning Comic Book Tattoo and Marvel's recent Girl Comics amongst other publications), she is currently working on two graphic novel series: one for Oni Press and one for Penguin Books. She also continues to work on her own independent series, Dragon Heir (printed through Sweatdrop Studios).

Steve Bell is one of most original and respected figures in contemporary cartooning. He has produced illustrations and comic strips for many different magazines, including Social Work Today, Punch, Private Eye, New Society, Radio Times, New Statesman, The Spectator and the Journalist. Since 1981 he has written and drawn the daily If… strip in The Guardian, creating such memorable images as - John Major with his underpants worn outside his trousers, Tony Blair with Margaret Thatcher’s rogue eyeball, and George W Bush as a chimpanzee. He has had twenty seven books published, including a cartoon autobiography of George Bush called Apes of Wrath, an anthology If… Marches On and, most recently, a Tony Blair self-help guide titled My Vision For a New You. His work has been published all over the world and he has won numerous awards.
Philip Barrett has been self-publishing comics since 2001, including writing and drawing 9 issues of his catch-all title 'Matter' and contributing to numerous anthologies. With Liam Geraghty he has produced 'Gazebo' and 'The Littlest Arsonist'. In 2010 the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry published Philip's 'best-of' collection 'The Human in Me'. He is a co-founder of Edition Book Arts which celebrates the craft of the book and self-publishing. Philip helped get the ball rolling on the regular Dublin Comic Jam and is particularly interested in how good comics are at documenting the collision between the worlds of the fantastical and the mundane.

Mel Gibson is a UK based comics scholar, consultant and Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University. She has run training events about comics and graphic novels for libraries, schools and other organisations since 1993. Her published research has addressed such varied topics as girls’ comics, picture books, children's literature, graphic novels and manga.

San Diego announcements from me ^_^

Emma Vieceli - Mon, 26/07/2010 - 1:34pm
Okay, so – though I wasn’t at San Diego Comic Con in person, I was there in spirit in the form of some very exciting announcements that I’ve been wanting to share for a long time.

Firstly, I will be working with writers Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, and the lovely folks at Oni Press, on the series - Avalon Chronicles. Hugely exciting! Nunzio and Christina are just wonderful, and I’m so honoured to not only be drawing their epic, but also to be allowed to join in on some of the story creation! I can’t wait to share some of the cast and progress work with you. For now, you can check N & C’s blog for more details, and I can offer up the sample preview I put together for San Diego’s announcement at the Oni panel.

Aaand - Richelle Mead is the fabulous writer responsible for the rather schmexy Vampire Academy series of novels, and I am just utterly thrilled to be the artist responsible for bringing her story to life in graphic novel form, to be published by Penguin Books. Getting to work on such a popular (and bloody awesome) series is exciting enough, but to be working for a giant like Penguin Books makes me feel very privileged. You can see Richelle’s own post at her blog, along with the cover mockup that Penguin have put together for the announcement, by clicking on the banner.

So – it’s an exciting time for me and I am more hyped than I can say! I’m already mid production on the first Avalon book, Once In a Blue Moon (a re-imagining of the same title released several years ago), and am eagerly awaiting Leigh Dragoon’s script for Vampire Academy – though I’ve played with test pages enough to know I’m going to very much enjoy these characters!

I look forward to sharing more news when I have it. ^_^

Fairy Lolita

Sonia Leong - Thu, 22/07/2010 - 12:04pm

This was a special design created for Minami Con 16 to be used on a limited run of the convention t-shirts. The mascot of Minami was traditionally a fairy, but because it was the 16th year of the con, the theme was Sweet 16 and so the committee thought Lolita was also a good feel for it.

So! A fairy in a lolita-style outfit, reminiscent of Victorian Maiden or Mary Magdelene. Originally done as pure lineart for a screen print on pink and blue shirts, but I coloured her properly yesterday evening.

(inked by hand, coloured in potatoshop, full view in deviantart)

July and plans over Summer/Autumn

Sonia Leong - Tue, 20/07/2010 - 2:39pm
After several weeks of touring the UK giving many workshops to schools (Hi to everyone I've met! *waves*), I'm back at home and working on the following. Please understand why I've been quiet, when you're juggling this much work with travelling and teaching, I need time to myself so as not to go crazy.

- finishing off two choose-your-adventure children's books
- scripting / drawing Love Stuffing volume 2
- drafting an adaptation of Reginald by Saki/ Hector Hugh Munroe
- scripting my new webcomic FujoFujo
- scripting my new dungeon-crawling fantasy, A Brush with Magic
- drafting short story Clockwork Wings
- scripting short story Terisias
- planning illustrations for a samurai/ninja children's book
- planning for mascot/animal characters for an educational project
- planning an artbook of my works over the past 10 years
- planning / scripting sci-fi story Libera Me
- planning a series of paintings based on old masters...

I'm surprisingly optimistic and raring to go. I'm hoping that my holiday will be perfect for thumbnailing and scripting ^^

I should have a few nice pictures to upload on dA soon, a combination of colour work and developmental sketches for the newest projects. I would like to finish off all of my Gaia commissions soon so that I don't have anything hanging over me T_T but aside from that, I'm looking forward to doing actual ART again.
